Cross stitching mostly.

I found a fun shop with loads of pop culture cross stitching as well as a few sweet patterns of gingerbread houses and Easter bunny houses. I have bought a quite heroic quantity of DMC floss to make them all. I spent some of last night organising the floss onto bobbins in a quite nifty plastic case. Continuing that tonight – though I’d much rather be stitching.

I have plans to make a shirt for Rickard (fabric bought and everything I’m just waiting for some interfacing for cuffs and collar), pillowcases and dresses for the girlies.

Speaking of dresses – did you see the new Oliver + S patterns that were released this week? I bought the Hide and Seek dress for Sofia. I’m thinking Easter dress.

For Isabel I got the Lady Skater from Kitschycoo and I made a toile that was too big then I lost momentum because I didn’t have any more knit to make a second toile.

I have plans to get something started tonight when Sofia brings a friend home but I’m not betting on it.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-41874234222674454062014-02-11T14:26:00.001+01:002014-02-11T14:26:18.571+01:00Do you art?

I finally got around to hang some art in my studio.

I don’t know how I found Lilla Lotta on Etsy but I’m glad I did. I’ve bought cotton twill tape from her and three of the prints on my wall. The far one with the bird says “May your bobbin always be full”. Pretty fitting for a sewing room.

I splurged and got duplicates of it. It will be a perfect gift for fellow sewists.

The little cat was a gift from my mother. I think I got it shortly after we had to give away our kitten because my father became allergic.

I totally winged the placement and I see now that it could have matched up better. I have a few other prints and framed cards to put up so maybe the additions will make it look less wonky.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-77926116251420657622014-02-03T18:03:00.001+01:002014-02-03T18:03:07.955+01:00Studio – moving in

Rickard and I went to IKEA on Saturday morning to get the two dressers I had had my eye on since I started planning my new studio. This Saturday was the first weekend after pay day for many in Sweden so we expected a jam packed IKEA but were happily proven wrong. We arrived just after 10 am when they opened and left with two dressers (black – not white like I had initially planned) and a bunch of knick-knacks that I needed for the studio.

I got two orchids and some lacy, pink pots for them. I’m not normally much for frills and lace for myself so I was surprised when I picked them out but decided to go with it.

The dressers took ages to put together – not because it was hard, it was just so many parts and they were huge! I made some progress on the Saturday but with movie plans and dinner at my in-law’s I didn’t start until late in the evening and out of consideration for the neighbours I decided to quit at 10:30 pm.

Sunday I took Sofia to a party and Isabel to IKEA to get some legs for the desk for the machines. When we came back Rickard took pity on me and helped me assemble the rest of the first dresser and all of the second.

It looks so very clean and de-cluttered now – but that is only because all the clutter is in my old sewing room and still needs to be moved. I plan to do some destash so I don’t just move a bunch of stuff I don’t really need/want/use. And I have huge stacks of paper that needs to be filed away. So I still have a long way to go, but at least I can sew a little now.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-44769981673506039712014-01-26T16:32:00.001+01:002014-01-26T16:32:44.471+01:00Quick, quick, slow

I started painting my studio yesterday and had high hopes I would get the brunt of the job done the same day. But dark turquoise walls are really hard to paint over with a white colour. I had bought 3 liters and the vendor assured me it would be enough.

Spoilers! It wasn’t.

The clock was ticking for closing time at the paint store so I enrolled my mother to go and buy another can of paint, certain another liter would be enough.

Nope, still not enough. And the store is closed on Sundays.

So we turned to the internet to see if we could find another local store that carried the same brand of paint and was also open on Sundays. Turns out paint is not something store owners think you want to buy on Sundays. But the internet told us there was a place 15 km away so we decided to go there.

Turns out the internet was wrong and they weren’t open on Sundays at all. The second closest place was 65 km away and while I really wanted to get it done, I didn’t want it that bad. So I had to rethink my plan.

I thought I’d get nothing done but I have primed the fourth wall, sanded down the chest just before it started snowing, painted the chest once (dry time 8 hours, ugh) and I just finished painting the focus wall the first time. I can paint it again in 3 hours which I intend to do, if only so I can take off the masking tape and see the result.

I’m really liking the colour.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-11873945572758571742014-01-24T23:08:00.001+01:002014-01-24T23:08:35.608+01:00Slow going

I didn’t get as much done in the studio this week as I had hoped. The girls are both back in school and evening activities have started up.

Tonight we bought Indian take-out and watched some Netflix before the girls bedtime, and I fell asleep on the sofa. Woohoo! Big night.

I did manage to bring out all the rollers and brushes from the shed though, so tomorrow, bright and early there will be painting.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-31120467394549009932014-01-22T16:51:00.001+01:002014-01-22T16:51:02.081+01:00New studio

Now that the attic is done (more or less) I have turned my attention to Isabel’s old room which is being turned into a studio for me. I say studio because it’s easier than “my new sewing room”, and also because it sounds less home spun.

When we moved in to this house we picked a dark turquoise for Isabel’s walls and I put up some cute ballerina wallies. They will all have to go now. It was time either way – Isabel had started mentioning that she wanted them gone even before we began the attic conversion. I was just sad to see them go. She was still in diapers when we moved in here. My wee girlie.

But I digress. I took down all the ballerinas yesterday and tonight I’ll go over and patch all the holes in the walls and window sills. I plan to get all the prep work done this week so I can start painting this weekend.

The plan is to paint three of the walls a bright white with a very slight pinkish tint and the fourth wall (the one with the door) will be a pale dusty pink. I also picked a different texture for the pink wall. Alcro has a brand they call Pashmina which has a very matt finish. I hope it will be a nice background for photographs as well.

The wall behind the door will be white and I plan to cover it somehow with flannel or fleece so I can use it as a design wall. The door will come off and put into storage. If I need to close off the studio I’ll have to make some kind of drape for the door instead. Both girls are so big now that there is no need to shut the door to keep them out any more.

Initially I planned to put the computer in one of the wardrobes but I may need the space for my stash and shop stock – I hope to do a personal destash when I move in though so there is still hope.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-50739440227851751922014-01-22T12:56:00.001+01:002014-01-22T12:56:30.400+01:00The Attic – Unveiling

Remember this?

In almost exactly six month’s time it has become this:

We did an epic IKEA run on Friday last week where we got beds, sofas, storage drawers, rugs, bedding, lamps etc. We assembled flat pack furniture until 10 pm on Friday and got up early on Saturday to continue.

Before the addition of posters and book cases this is what Sofia’s room looked like. The girls had already slept up there that night but let’s not dwell on that.

We have the closet to finish as well in the attic but we have all the material for it – we’re saving the work for the weekend. I have a chest to sand and paint this weekend as well. Fingers crossed the temps rise a little so I can get to it.

It took 6 months and 3 days from start to move in which was a bit longer than we had anticipated but still not bad since we’ve worked full-time as well.

All that’s left for the girls to do now is find the favourite lounge spot. We are almost finished with book 4, The Grey King and I’m constantly reminded of how much I loved them as a child and how much they shaped what I’m looking for in books.

I was 10 or 11 when my teacher, who was also the school’s librarian, handed me The Dark is Rising one day at school and said “I think you’d like this one”. I took it home and showed it to my Mum who asked if she could read it first. Not sure if she was vetting my reading or not and I said sure – I was a little scared by the cover illustration.

She finished it quickly and handed it back to me saying I should definitely read it, but that it was a bit scary. Which of course made me put it at the back of the queue – I had mostly read Little House and Anne of Green Gable by then so scary books weren’t really my thing (or so I thought).

Then the date when I had to bring the book back to school was getting closer and I sat down to read it after all. And my memory is that I devoured it in one sitting, berating my mother for saying it was scary and immediately bringing it back to my teacher asking for more of the same.

For some reason The Dark is Rising was the first book to be translated into Swedish so I read them out of order.

I got four of the books over the next year or two and read them over and over again while hoping to get the fifth and last book for my birthday. A few weeks before my birthday I was home sick and I got permission to take a nap in my Mum’s bed. I put my hand underneath her pillow and pulled out Silver on the Tree. She had bough it for me and was reading it herself before giving it to me.

It took all my willpower to put the book back without reading it and then wait until the book turned up, wrapped for my birthday.

As I learned more English in school I found myself attempting to translate the books into English in my head as I read them. But it wasn’t enough. I wanted to read them in English. So – this was before Internet and Amazon in the late 80′s – I went to a book store in town and asked them to track the books down for me and they found the sequence – all five books in one.

I brought it with me on our graduation trip to Yugoslavia (before the Balkan-war) and got a lot of comments from my class mates on why I read in English and what a snob I was. I didn’t care.

Since then I’ve read it several times – usually when I’m sick and need a distraction from my stuffed nose or sore throat. I rarely use it at other times of year. The usual way of using it is in sweet rolls where you shape the dough into s-shapes and decorate with raisins.

I plan to do that too but yesterday as the storm Sven raged outside I made almond paste filled saffron rolls.

I made a standard sweet roll dough. I haven’t counted them and given that they are of such varying size I don’t think a number is really helpful.

Like I said the recipe is super easy to make. You just need to plan ahead since it does need to rest overnight. It’s also not suitable to make large cookies from or gingerbread houses. I have another recipe for those.

My Grandma has made this gingerbread recipe since I was a little girl. She got it from her mother (Inez) so it is tried and tested.

I can still remember the smell in Grandma’s kitchen when she made gingerbread. Traditionally they are only made for Christmas so it was quite a treat when it was finally time to make them. Plus it meant that Santa was coming soon. I remember the scent of ginger and cinnamon filling her kitchen and wafting through the rest of the house. I remember the feeling when you eat the very first gingerbread if the year, fresh from the oven. How you almost, but not quite burned your tongue and how it was totally worth it. I remember how I waited until Grandma turned her back or went to the doorstep to let the baking trays cool, then I’d quickly steal another one, and another and yet another. And of course she knew exactly what was going on.

Grandma Inez’s Swedish Gingerbread

200 g golden syrup (not quite a cup)

200 g butter

200 g caster sugar (almost a cup)

2 egg yolks

1 tbs ground ginger

2 tbs ground cinnamon

(1 tsp ground cloves – optional)

1 tbs baking soda

600 g wheat flour (Leave enough so you can roll out the cookies)

Heat syrup, butter and sugar in a pan, but do not let it boil. Leave to cool slightly before mixing in the egg yolks, spices, baking soda and flour.

Pour it into a bowl or soup plate and let the dough set in the fridge over night.

When you’re ready to start making the cookies, preheat the oven to 200C (400F). Roll out the dough as thinly as you can. It should only be a few millimetres thick. Mark off cookies with cookie cutters in different shapes. Traditionally you use hearts, stars, pine trees, men and women, but today a wide range of shapes are available. We have a dolphin and I found a bat that I will buy for this year. I got this set at IKEA and they made really cute bears.

Place the cookies directly on the baking tray or use a baking paper. Try to bake a few cookies first, if they spread you should add more flour. Bake them for 7-9 minutes. Watch them closely so they don’t turn too dark.

The gingerbread is quite soft when it comes out of the oven so let them cool on the tray before you move them to a cooling rack, or they will mould to whatever you place them on.

Let the cookie sheets cool before new cookies are placed on them, that way they’ll come out smooth. If you don’t they form bubbles which doesn’t look very nice.

I don’t ice this gingerbread. I save that for gingerbread houses and the larger figures.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-18216850556946375992013-12-04T17:26:00.001+01:002013-12-04T17:26:33.284+01:00Odour

After our lovely dinner last night (fried herring with mashed potatoes) we drove to the hardware store to get moulding for the hatches in the attic and for the window sills.

Let me just say that the mix of fresh gingerbread and fried herring that hit us when we came back home was such a gross combination.

Never again!

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-51690962542735653022013-12-04T12:20:00.001+01:002013-12-04T12:20:33.533+01:00Gingerbreaded

On Monday night I mixed up a batch of my great grandma Inez’s gingerbread.

It’s a dead easy recipe to make but it needs to rest overnight or it will be too runny to work with. Four Sundays before Christmas Eve we light a candle and meet with friends and family to celebrate with big cocktail parties or just coffee and cookies.

This candle holder has been with me and Rickard since we moved in together. I decorated it with ribbon one year and it’s sort of stayed on. Some years (like this year, I decorate it with moss and assorted bling. Other years I leave it empty.

The yarn bullfinches are a gift from my grandmother (I think).

The little white bowl is filled with Christmas-y spices (star anise, cinnamon stick, cloves and cardamom) and some little spruce branches.

I also try to light the date candle every day. It started out well yesterday morning, but today we forgot so I think we will save this one for evenings. Isabel doesn’t like that they’re not even, but I like them because they are not even. I did notice a mild allergic reaction when I made them so I won’t be touching them too much. As long as I leave them hanging I can handle them just fine.

This is about how much I decorate before Lucia (Dec 13th). Everything else will have to wait until then. And the tree is brought in on the 23rd. (Although it looks like we won’t have a tree this year.) I also decided not to change the curtains by our dining table to the Christmas-y ones. Everyone seemed to be there determined to have a great time and everyone was excited about being part of this.

The sort of cheesy PSAs at the beginning with Commander Strax telling us about proper cinema etiquette and turning our mobile communications devices off was met with laughter and cheers as well as the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors’ information about the 3D-glasses.

There was a very climactic moment near the end when the whole theatre exploded in cheers as we saw a distinctive pair of eyes and eyebrows, as well as a sweet sentimental out-pouring of emotion when a well-known face from the past turned up.

The most difficult part of the evening was keeping a straight face as we exited the theatre right next to the line of people getting in to see the second viewing. No spoilers, please.

We drove straight home to find the BBC had released not only a teaser trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas Special (Daleks! Cybermen!) but also a teaser for the new Sherlock series 3!

It’s going to be a busy season.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-77978567961509207192013-11-26T06:20:00.001+01:002013-11-26T06:20:25.669+01:00Closeted

Once the girls’ rooms were painted I realised I had lots of blue and pink paint left over and so I do what you do when you’re bitten by a bug. The walls are all painted now – we ran out of paint with a wall and a half left in the stairwell and had to thin it out with water to make it last.

It worked.

Rickard masked off the wall so I could start painting the pink focus wall in Sofia’s room. It was really very pink. The name of the shade was Flamingo and it’s a suitable name.

I have promised her gold circles or stars (she can’t make up her mind) on the left half of the wall where her bed will go. I’m not sure how to go about it but I’m sure it can’t be all that difficult.

We only got to one coat on Saturday because we were otherwise engaged in the afternoon and evening (more on that in another post). But Sunday morning, bright and early .. well – at 11 am because we over slept – I got up there again and painted a second coat before I started on Isabel’s blue wall.

And it is as blue as Sofia’s wall is pink. This shade is called Grekland (Greece) and it looked hideous in the can but I actually really like it. In the picture I’ve only done one coat. After the second coat the colour really pops. I have a package of big paper pom poms in blues and greens I plan to give Isabel for Christmas along with a string of Happy Lights in blues.

Sofia will also get a string of Happy lights but I’ve not yet decided on what colour scheme to get her.

Both girls have approved of the colours and we are moving ahead with installing the inspection hatches in the walls so we can insulate around them and put up some mouldings.

We’re also trying to co-ordinate with the plumber guy who’ll install the radiators. We want him to do that before we put down the floor boards.

It’s all moving along nicely.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-81771843302340837252013-11-11T17:09:00.001+01:002013-11-11T17:09:08.907+01:00Cultured

I’m seeing Shakespeare on Wednesday. The RSC puts on Richard II in Stratford-upon-Avon and send it live in theatres around the world. It felt weird seeing her off from the front steps. Going hiking on her own.

It rained most of the time so they cut the day short and she was home, wet and cold almost an hour earlier than expected.

I can still remember coming home from a rainy day in the woods and sinking into a hot bath to warm up then lounging in sweatpants and a tee the rest of the day. Glorious.

The fact that I finished her new leggings as she was in her bath didn’t go amiss either. She was very pleased, even though they weren’t a perfect fit. Too short in the leg and too high in the rise.

Back to drafting for me.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-39730922767687177712013-11-08T11:08:00.001+01:002013-11-08T11:08:40.861+01:00Other places I’ve been online

I have an awesome circle of friends I’ve met online. Most of them I met at the Oliver + S discussion forums. Over time we have come to get to know each other well and share in our successes and tribulations, both in regards to sewing and life in general. We’ve seen our kids grow up through the pictures we share and I feel as close to them as any “IRL”-friend I’ve ever had.

A few weeks ago a question popped up on the O+S forums asking if it was possible to alter a dress with a buttoned back to a zippered back (specifically the new Library dress) and I replied with how I would do it.

We all talked for a bit and it soon became clear that it wasn’t as straight forward to explain as I had thought. Liesl, the owner and designer of Oliver + S suggested that a tutorial might be needed and I ended up volunteering to write it and this week she posted it on the blog.

I work as a technical writer during the day and writing the tutorial was a lot like writing a technical manual – but with a more interesting (to me) topic. The company I work for designs and manufactures machines for the food and beverage industry. And while that is interesting in a way, I do find it more appealing to write about sewing and sewing techniques than about belts and frequency inverters.

You can read my tutorial here.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-18940448357896039122013-11-08T09:38:00.001+01:002013-11-08T09:38:39.842+01:00Attic update

We’re picking up the floor for the attic today. So there will be package carrying tonight, I think. One pack contains 3 sq meters of floor boards and I’m pretty sure it weighs a ton. I’m not sure if we can manage to get them upstairs together. But we’ll try.

We have one wall left in Isabel’s room to paint the first coat on, and the whole hall and stairwell. Then we’ll give it a second coat and it will be done.

Well, we’re painting accent walls as well so not exactly done. Sofia will get a bright pink and Isabel a bright blue.

The floor is oak parquet, in a similar style to what we have downstairs. Like this but without the yellow overcast:

<a href='http://www.flickr.com/photos/isabeldecibel/10099927676/' title='Playtime leggings from @oliverands. Since they are water filled we don’t want to lay the floor until he’s been here.

The rooms are starting to look like proper rooms too. I can’t wait to start move the girls in, but we still have a long way to go. We need doors and window sills, base boards, electricity etc. But we’re seeing the end of it.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301060340981619439.post-13019508398133393402013-10-23T19:57:00.001+02:002013-10-23T19:57:00.938+02:00Locking serged seam ends

I sometimes visit the forums on Oliver + S’s site. In fact it is where I met my circle of awesome sewing friends from around the world.

When I visited today someone asked how you lock the thread after you serge a seam and I replied with my method but then figured I should just post it here. With pictures.

I have to admit I don’t always do it this way. Ain’t no body got time for that. If a seam is going to be sewn over with another seam I pretty much always just cut the tail from the serger off.

But sometimes you really need to lock it in and this is how I usually do it.

Leave a long tail after you finished serging. Just let it run for a couple of inches before you cut the tail off with the serger’s knife. Thread the tail on a blunt needle with a big eye, I usually call it a darning needle but YMMV.

Weave the tail back on itself on the wrong side of the seam allowance for an inch or so. Pull the needle through and off the tail. Make sure you don’t pull too hard on the tail or the corner will look wonky.

Cut it off and you are done.

When you sew over this you’ll lock the tail in even more securely.

Lattemamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04906893837735756451noreply@blogger.com
